The Object of Blackjack

The object of blackjack is to produce a hand that is higher than the dealer’s without going over the total of 21. Any hand that is equal to a figure over 21 will immediately go bust and lose that game. An ideal hand would be a face card and an ace which is blackjack. With the ace equalling 11 they combine to form a perfect 21.

The Basics of Blackjack

All cards from 2 up to 10 are represented as their face value. Face cards are all equal to 10, and the ace can be represented as either a 1 or an 11, whichever is more beneficial to the hand. Bets are placed before play, but can be doubled up once during play. Two cards are dealt to the player and the dealer. The player’s cards are dealt face up, and the dealer’s cards are dealt with one card facing up and the other one facing down. The player plays his hand first, and once he decides to stand the dealer will play his hand. The dealer does not have the freedom of choice that the player does, and must hit if his hand equals 16 or less, and must stand if his hand is 18 or more.

Terminology

Understanding the basic blackjack terminology will make it easier for new players to adapt to the game, and start winning with our online casino.

  • Stand: The player decides not to take anymore cards and discontinue his play for this round. The dealer is now free to play his hand.
  • Hit: The player requests for the dealer to provide him with another card. This can continue until the player goes bust or until the player decides to stand.
  • Double down: The player decides to double his bet at the same time as taking another card. Once a player has doubled down, he may not hit again.
  • Split: If the player is dealt two of the same cards he can divide them into two separate hands. The original bet will then effectively double, as the same wagered amount will be placed on each hand. Each of the hands will then also receive a second card, and can then be played out separately as individual hands.
  • Push: When the dealer’s hand and the player’s hand are both equal and tied.
  • Surrender: If the player is in a position where he thinks or knows he cannot win, he may surrender half of his wagered amount as a precaution. Rather than risk losing the full bet.
  • Take Insurance: If the dealer deals himself an ace as his up card, the player can place an insurance bet that the face down card will be a 10, making the dealer’s hand blackjack. The insurance bet amounts to half of your original bet, and if won will provide you with a 2 – 1 payout. If the dealer does not have blackjack the player loses his insurance bet, but can then carry on with a normal hand.
  • Soft Hand: A hand that it played with the ace being represented as an 11.
  • Hard Hand: A hand being played with the ace being represented as a 1.
