The Basics of Poker
The game of Poker is fairly intricate, with a lot of rules and game plans that need to be revised for an expert level of play. Online Poker is no different, and there are a large number of variations in the game that could make it seem confusing. However, once the basic rules of each poker game are understood, then the only thing to do is practice. A full deck of standard playing cards is used, and play commences in a clockwise direction.
How to Win in Online Poker
Depending on which variation of poker is being played, there are many different ways in which to triumph. There are a number of distinctive types of hands that can win the round for the player, provided they are not matched up against a hand that ranks higher than theirs. When it comes time for the player to play, there are a few options for him to take:
- Check – to see if there is already a bet on the table
- Bet – if there is not a bet, then the player can place his or her bet first
- Call – if the player chooses to match the bet currently on the table
- Raise – if the player chooses to raise the bet currently on the table
- Fold – if the player chooses to opt out of this round, forfeiting his or her chance to win as well as surrendering his cards
After the player has placed his or her bet, the resultant hands will determine who has actually won the game. The various different winning hands are as follows:
- Royal Flush – straight set of the highest ranking cards in one suit, for example: 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace of Hearts
- Straight Flush – A complete succession of numbers of the same suit, for example: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 of Spades
- Four of a kind – 4 of the same card value, one of each suit. For example: 4 Kings
- Full house – 3 cards of the same matching value, and 2 cards of another matching value
- Flush – 5 cards of the same suit
- Straight – a complete succession of 5 cards of any suit, for example: 3 of hearts, 4 of clubs, 5 of diamonds, 6 of hearts and 7 of spades
- Three of a kind – 3 cards of the same value
- Two Pair – 2 cards of the same value, and another 2 cards of the same value but different to the first set
- One Pair – two cards of the same value
- High Card – game goes to the hand with the highest card
